Purpose
The DoD Chief Information Officer was responsibled for the Enterprise
Information Environment Mission Area (EIEMA), and for transforming it to a net-centric
environment. The Deputy DoD CIO has established four domains,
and through these manages its portfolio of IT programs, projects and systems. The EIEMA domains were: Communications (GIG BE),
Computing Infrastructure (Architecture), Information Assurance and Core Enterprise
Services (CES).
Enterprise Services enable interoperability and information
shared in a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Managing CES in a portfolio enabled the Department
to improve interoperability, increase agility and minimize investments
in redundant services and to allocate resources more efficiently.
This strategy guided the establishment of the CES Domain portfolio
– to include scoping the domain, managing the portfolio, and implementing
the Core Enterprise Services that facilitated this migration.
AFEI provides industry input on the development of the terms of reference, service definition framework and governance aspects of the DoD strategy for enterprise service deployment. One important role was helping to "get the word out" about this subject.
